Artist's Comments

Second sculpture for my Monsters class. This one's also a wire armature wrapped in cloth, but this time I covered it in paper-clay (a really cool air-hardening clay made from volcanic ash) and painted it with acrylic. The gauze bandages are, well...gauze bandages. The intestines, however, are red yarn dipped in a latex solution.

The assignment was to make something dealing with the theme "beauty and repulsion"...we had the option to make two creatures, one beautiful and one repulsive, or we could try to integrate the two concepts into one. That's what I wanted to do, so I picked a form I thought was beautiful (a deer) and added both beautiful (the serene moon face) and repulsive (blood, gore) features.

A lot of people said it reminded them of the forest spirit in Princess Mononoke, which I wasn't actually thinking about...but if you want to read it that way, then this is "Princess Mononoke meets Silent Hill" or something.

My girlfriend (who loves this and has claimed it as her own) says I'm in my "red and white" period...I honestly didn't realize how much I like those colors together. But if you look at this with my other sculptures, Coccoon and Baby's Breath, I think they all live in the same color world.

I really love this -- the undulating body is the best part, haha. Looks great. :)

This is awesome.
Where do you go to school, if you don't mind me asking? That sounds like an amazing class.

I don't read the script, the script reads me.

Thanks! I'm a junior at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). And yes, it was an amazing class---we watched horror movies all day and then went home and made monsters! It was a Wintersession class (our more "relaxed" period), so it was a bit different and more chilled out than a lot of my other studios. I really enjoyed it as kind of a break.

Cool, thanks for the info.
I'm looking at schools to transfer to, so that was really helpful. ;)

Wonderful work!

No problem. If you want to know more about RISD, drop me a note or something. :)

Nice - before I read the description I thought it looked a bit like a cross between the Princess Mononoke forest spirit and the thing down the well in Ocarina of Time.

The bigger you build the bonfire, the more darkness is revealed
