Here's a painting that's had a fairly long gestation period, and has finally popped out at the end of my RISD career. Sophomore year, my Illustration 1 teacher gave us an assignment to pick a word and illustrate it. I chose the word "exposed" and made a fairly shitty oil painting (we had two weeks) loosely inspired by the color palette and style of Michael Hussar. I liked my concept, but not the execution, so junior year I took a class called Oil Techniques for Illustrators, and I redid the piece...but I never finished it.
So, this spring, a week before my senior show, I worked overtime to finish the painting, and this is the result. I'm pretty happy with it and I guess other people were too, because they picked it for the Senior Invitational show at the end of the year. Wooo!
In case you're having trouble figuring it out (some people did)...yes, that is her Siamese twin doing a handstand under her skirt.
The execution is lovely. I like the colour palette ad the composition balance. Would you like to clear for me, please, what is the exact concept of this?
Um...well...it's an illustration for the word "exposed." Metaphorically, she's exposing an aspect of herself that's rarely seen, a secret. Literally, she's exposing the fact that she's actually one half of a set of conjoined (or "Siamese") twins.
I also wanted to play with the idea of a woman "exposing" herself in a sort of erotic peepshow context, but having what is actually exposed be something much more unexpected.
I hope that makes it clearer?

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
