I am degreed.

Wed Jun 3, 2009, 6:52 AM
So...

I now have a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Also, the knowledge that I do not, in fact, want to work as an illustrator. Thanks, art school.

I don't regret going---I met my closest friends and my partner (!!!), networked with some amazing and awe-inspiring artists, and grew immensely in terms of my technical skill and visual problem-solving.

But right now, I kind of hate art and don't really want to do it. So I'm taking a break. I don't know how long the break will be. I'm hoping that once art isn't work anymore, the itch will come back and I'll be able to make things for myself again.

I'll put a few of my last efforts into the gallery, and then I'll probably disappear for awhile. Not that I'm really a big presence here anyway.

A word of warning: I sometimes get people emailing me from DA to ask about applying to RISD, or art school in general. I've really enjoyed talking with you folks, but DON'T EMAIL ME RIGHT NOW. Honestly, I'm too burned out and bitter and I will probably tell you not to go. I've just spent four grueling years there and reached the end of my rope and I don't have a lot nice to say right now. This doesn't mean that RISD isn't a fantastic school and that I didn't enjoy it (I did). I'm just goddamned sick of it and not a very good spokesperson. Talk to somebody else, maybe somebody who's still attending, or somebody who really and truly wants an art career.

So here's to hoping I can get back the artistic itch that art school killed for me. I'm pretty sure it'll come. Maybe soon. Everything is different now, and I'm already feeling the change.

Congratulations on achieving the degree, that is note worthy. I may not truly understand what art school did to your art desires but I do know that being an english major crushed my writing spirit. I do enjoy your work and hope that the itch returns soon, but its your art and you should do it for you so when you do return I will be here awaiting your beautiful take on the forms of the world.

I'll be loathe to see you drop off the face of the planet, but I suppose you have to do what you have to do. Until you return, Good luck; I'll be eagerly waiting for your next piece once you're up to it.

Hey laydee-
I don't think I got to say it on the day, but congratulations! I really hope you find your inspiration again. I can empathize to a degree...this last year really it's felt a lot less like play than it used to. I really look forward to seeing whatever it is you choose to do. If you do pick it back up, consider posting whatever you do up online, ok? I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see.
And if you get any more RISD questions, you can pass em my way if you like! I'm all sunshine and roses :D
Much love!

Thanks...haha, I read your journal entry and it's pretty much the opposite of mine, so I'll definitely send the aspiring RISD kids your way. I just want to be as far away from the world of corporate illustration (or even freelance illustration) as I can get.

I'll certainly post whatever shit I do up here, I'm pleased and flattered that you and several other people have commented saying you'd miss me if I disappeared. :)

By the way, your commencement speech almost made me cry. Well done, sir. And you had to follow Sir Ken!

You were an artist when the universe spun you up and gave you to me (for awhile, anyway...), and you'll be an artist until you spin back out into the universe. Not even art school could kill that, so relax, go do what pleases you, and you'll find that under all the stress, the itch never really left.

Oh too bad, right now I just met your DA. It must be a so frustrating phase for you. I just hope it's really a phase and I hope it pass as soon as possible 'cause you have such a great talent and no one should lost one's love for art because of rotten people or anything it may be.
(sorry about my english I hope you understand it, anyway all I mean is just "hope you come back soon")
